Those Behind Outdoor Luxuriez
Hello, My name is Colton. I am the one behind Outdoor Luxuriez. Most of the content you will see that has the Outdoor Luxuriez name stamped to it is created by me. I guess you could say I am a “Do it myself” kind of guy. You see, I have a large amount of experience when it comes to outdoor activities such as Camping, Backpacking, Hiking, Snowshoeing, Fishing, Surviving…ect. Back in the day, when I would come to the internet or other resources in an effort to gaining information about such subjects, I would find myself getting very selective as to the sources I was willing to trust.
Now days, I feel I have built up quite a knowledge base of information surrounding the topics of Camping, Backpacking, Hiking, & Snowshoeing. Along with many other subjects that are closely related, that I feel is worth sharing. Due to this, I have decided I would begin sharing the knowledge I have accumulated over the years in an effort to help you gain the much needed insight into the specific questions and / or problems that you may be experiencing currently.
A little About Colton
First of all, I should note: When browsing Outdoor Luxuriez you are likely to see (Located somewhere within the content) an abbreviation of my name, otherwise known as my nickname if you will. Many know me by either Colton (My Full Name), or Colt (My nickname). Either way I assure you both are me. I prefer to use my nickname simple due to the fact that it’s simpler, and easier for you (My readers, and viewers) to remember me by.
Anyway, My background is actually quite special to me. Given the fact that I basically have grown up camping nearly every weekend since I can remember, that is when spring, summer, and fall was around. Winter made travel difficult but we were still able to get out from time to time thankfully to the aid of snowshoes and 4 wheel drive.
You see, my family has owned some land in the mountains of Utah for a long time, I mean since the mid 1900’s. Anyway back when I was still in grade school, nearly every weekend during summer break we would go camping, and every other weekend when school came back into swing. Now, typically it would be my grandparents who would take my Uncle, Cousins, Brother, Sister, And Myself. We all had great relationships between each other and always looked forward to spending each weekend at the cabin.
Now, I said “Cabin”, but its not exactly the style of cabin you may be thinking of… You see, this cabin was more like a large rundown shed, that would always be filled with flies when we would show up to camp for the weekend. Now given the fact that we had a large amount of land in the mountains (50 Acres) we had the ability to do nearly anything we could think of. From building huts out of fallen over trees to building large dam’s in the river below.
Now of course we had atv’s and things of that sort. But my biggest memory from back in the day was when I randomly said to my cousin (Now, we were 11 or 12 Years old at the time), “lets hike to the top of that mountain, and camp on it tonight!” As I pointed to the top of “Arrow Mountain” (We called it arrow mountain because it looked like a gigantic arrow pointing at the top of the mountain) He said alright. So we tied together our 2 sleeping bags in order to shape them like a backpack for one of us to carry, as the other would carry a small backpack with only the essentials (2 granola bars, a flash light, the tent, and possibly a little water). I have to admit, we didn’t have much at all. But we only took what we thought we need.
I wanted to take some matches so we could start a fire, but my grandma wouldn’t let me. Something about “Me potentially starting the mountain on fire…” anyway, we had our sleeping bags, tent, a little food and we were off. The climb was steep in sections, with heavy brush. Making travel quite slow and cumbersome from time to time. But eventually we got to a ridge that we followed the rest the way up to the peak.
It didn’t take us long to reach the top (Maybe 1 – 2 Hours). But when we got up their the top where the ground was flat Perfect for a tent was right at the edge of a tree line. Now, I don’t know about you, but to 2 kids, sleeping right at the edge of a tree line was quite terrifying to say the least. Now, we were in cougar country, and the thought of a cougar, or something else coming to the edge of the tree line and getting us was heavily on our minds…
So, like brilliant young bucks. We decided we would pitch our tent in the middle of a patch of brush. Well, as we were pitching the tent it was starting to get dark and all we could think about was getting the tent up then going to bed. We totally didn’t think about the fact that the ground was sloped where we were setting up the tent, and shortly into the night My cousin and I found ourselves at the bottom edge of the tent stacked…
The ground was so slanted that at some point in the middle of the night I found myself on top of my cousin bren… We were literally stacked in the lowest corner of the tent… Not to mention the ground was so rocky, and uneven underneath the tent that you mostly would develop scoliosis if you were to spend a full night their… Now, of course we didn’t sleep good at all. But that didn’t matter. We had conquered our fears of camping on top of the mountain alone and we were stoked!
That morning, we got up, cleaned up the tent and sleeping bags, each eat our granola bar, and began back down the mountain. On our way back down we did get caught up from time to time, as our original strategy was to simply walk a straight line down the mountain. But like in most cases, this doesn’t work well due to the terrain changes at different levels of the mountain. We found ourselves following game trails from time to time that traversed the mountain in order to find routes around thick brush, and steep terrain.
Eventually we made it to the base of the canyon where we then had to go up another hill in order to get back to where our grandparents were camping at.
We came walking back into camp with Grandpa cooking up some eggs and bacon, with grandma rushing out to ask us how it went! We were so excited to tell them about it, but even more excited to have some breakfast, as we were quite hungry!
Now, I tell you this story because this was the beginning of what I call, my excitement to scale large mountains in order to see what amazing experiences the peaks have instore for me, and those who come on the adventure. You see, ever since hiking, and camping on top of that mountain I became extremely interested in what I would later know as backpacking.
Now days I don’t go camping quite as much as I used to, but when I do go I look to experience as much as the mountains, and canyons around have to offer! And I want others to experience it as well. That is why Outdoor Luxuriez has become such a large part of my life. I want to help others experience what I experience every time it find myself surrounded by large mountains, and an endless landscape to explore!
I guess you could say Outdoor Luxuriez was built 100% For You. I hope you find it to be a useful resource when you need answers!
